The rugged, beautiful, West coast of Scotland, is one of the remaining wildernesses in the British Isles. This sparsely populated land is a perfect habitat for wildlife and birds who use its heather, rock and sandy terrain to make homes.

Seals can occasionally be seen from the Hotel at very high tide, but you are ensured an appearance at the nearby fishing port of Kinlochbervie looking for an easy supper from the fishing boats landing their catch. It is only the very lucky or the early riser who can catch the Otters before they disappear out of sight from the disturbances of the day.

Next to the Hotel, the River Rhiconich flows down from between Arkle and Foinaven to meet the sea at Loch Inchard where Otters and Grey Herons make their homes along the rocky banks. There is rarely a moment through the day when these elegant birds cannot be picked out, although well camouflaged against the rocky shoreline. There are also Goosanders, Mergansers, Eiders and other species nesting in this immediate area.

Handa Island

Nearby is the Scottish Wildlife Trust, Handa Isle bird sanctuary which can be reached by a short ferry ride from the picturesque hamlet of Tarbet.

Wildlife on Handa

The island is home to breeding colonies of Puffins, Kittiwakes, Razorbills, Fulmars, Great & Arctic Skuas and Guillemots.

Visit Handa Island

There are herds of Red Deer running freely in the mountains and they can be seen at sea level more during the winter months looking for food, they are the biggest traffic hazard to motorists.
